3 Signs You Need A New Windshield

Posted on

If your windshield is a little damaged, you can drive around with it and still be relatively safe. However, if your windshield has certain types of damage, it really isn't safe for you to drive around with your windshield damaged anymore.

Sign #1: Damage Blocks Your View

If you have cracks or chips that are directly in your line of sight as you drive, you are going to need to get your windshield fixed. Windshield damage that is directly in your line of sight impedes your ability to drive safely.

If you get into an accident, and your windshield was already damaged, regardless of the circumstances of the accident, you could be held responsible for the accident. In many states, it is against the law to drive around with a windshield that is damaged to the extent that it interferes with your vision.

So if you have to adjust how you sit in the driver's seat in order to see through your damaged windshield, you need to get it fixed.

Sign #2: Damage Goes Deep

Second, you need to look closely at the damage to your windshield. If the damage goes deep into the windshield, then you have pitting on your windshield. Pitting is when the damage goes beyond a scratch on the surface of your windshield and extends down into the other layers of your windshield.

Pitting means that the integrity of your windshield is compromised.

When the integrity of your windshield is compromised, it can't provide you with the necessary protection that it is designed to give you if you get into an accident. Your windshield is important to keeping you safe when you get into an accident. Your windshield helps keep your roof from collapsing and helps keep the front of your vehicle into shape as well.

Sign #3: Internal Damage

Third, damage to your windshield is not always on the outside of your windshield. Damage to your windshield can also occur inside of your windshield as well.

If you notice that your windshield has a scratch and when you touch inside of your windshield, you see that the scratch is rough inside instead of outside of your window, you have internal window damage. Internal window damage is serious and needs to be fixed right away.

If you have damage to your windshield that goes deep beyond the surface or blocks our view, you need to get a new windshield installed. If your windshield has internal damage, you are going to want to get it replaced as well.
